• Artists

  What is the role of the artist in connecting museums and cities? The public domain has traditionally been the space for artistic practices outside of the museum, e.g. as a form of critique. Artists have developed multiple ways in dealing with the dynamics of the public sphere and developed artistic tactics and strategies on how to engage with the issues of the city.

• Collection

  Is the collection intended primarily for display in the museum? Or can the collection play a role in the city- via new art production and public programming? The collection is a tangible and central part of the majority of modern art museums. Museum walls and collections seem to be mutually dependent. But in recent years museums have managed to present their collections beyond their own walls.

• Critique

  The museum is traditionally an established cultural space. The intensification of the institution with the public domain, like the city, puts and emphasis on the role and function of the institution. A critical perspective on the position of the museum remains important when engaging with a different discursive domain, like the urban realm. How can the museums carry out institutional critique when infiltrating the city? How can the museums re-invent themselves through the intervention in the urban realm?

• Portable

  Renovation and extension projects of museum cause the need for temporary exhibitions and program venues. In regards to the infiltration of the city it raises questions regarding the representation of the institution. Is it sufficient to collaborate with different partners in the programming? Does the museum need a recognizable, portable space as an extension of the museum into the city?

• Society

  The museum is not only a cultural institution, but it also has a role within the society. The relationship between the museum and society revolves around the question of the position the institution has and can take regarding social issues. Does the museum have a responsibility to deal with problems which occur in the city or in a neighbourhood; can it assist integration or even contribute to the improvement of the quality of life?
